During the Advent season, lots of preparations are made for the greatest forthcoming feast - Christmas. Since the 19th century, many different customs and traditions had developed in order to count the remaining days until Christmas Day. Very popular with the children is the advent calendar with 24 little doors to open where sweets are hidden. The Advent wreath with its candles serves as a nice extension of the christmas decorations. The number of candles varies greatly between 4 and 23, depending on the region. Basically, the following applies: the more candles burn, the closer the Christmas Day comes.
