The Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia was adopted on 4 May 1990, by the Supreme Council of the Latvian Republic. It lost its independence in 1940, when it was annexed by the Soviet Union. On this day in 1990, it was resolved that the occupation by the Soviet Union was illegal and the independence has been restored.
