The origin of this holiday goes back to the Treaty of Westphalia from 1648, with which the end of oppression of protestants during the Thirty Years' War has been initiated. All confessions celebrate this regional Augsburg holiday by now. Augsburg thus is the city with the most holidays in Germany. Every three years the Augsburg Peace Prize is awarded to people, that have done the most to achieve a tolerant and peaceful exchange between cultures and religions.
